An herb used in Chinese medicine “Astragalus root” contains chemicals that can be used to complement anti-retroviral therapy or even replace, recommended Rita Effros, a member of the UCLA AIDS Institute, who made ​​the discovery.

Found that not only slows telomere shortening, but also increased production of chemokines and cytokines cells, which previously has been shown to inhibit HIV replication.
In addition to fighting HIV, this strategy can be effective in combating other problems associated with immunodeficiency, including increased susceptibility to viral infections or chronic diseases associated with aging, the researchers said.

A recent study on the cluster fig found that it contains several chemicals that may be effective in fighting HIV. The study was published in August 2011 in the journal Natural Product Communications. The cluster fig, or Ficus glomarata (alt. Ficus racemosa) is a native of Australasia, India and Southeast Asia. The cluster fig is edible, and it’s bark has been as medicine by some traditional healers. The fruits are edible, but have never been grown or sold commercially because they are a favored food of a species of wasps, and it is nearly impossible to find a fruit that does not have one or more wasps inside of it.
Researchers isolated 5 chemicals from the cluster fig to see if they would be effective against HIV. Two of the five chemicals inhibited HIV integrase – a process that is targeted by anti-retroviral medication to prevent HIV replicating itself.
Unfortunately, this study is not of immediate use to people with HIV/AIDS. The lack of commercially available cluster fig makes it unusable as an herbal therapy most most people with HIV/AIDS, though people who live where it grows may be able to get some on a regular basis. However, the study did not use an extract of the cluster fig, or fig juice. It used a few specific chemicals found in the fig. There won’t be enough of these chemicals in any given fig to help, unless someone were to eat dozens of figs every day.
As interesting as this study is, the benefits of the cluster fig will be for the future. It is possible that further studies will find a way to synthesize the chemical in cluster fig that inhibit HIV. If that happens, it is possible that there will be a new anti-retroviral medication available in a few years, developed from the cluster fig.
The cluster fig isn’t the only fig tree that is being looked at to help fight HIV. Another study, testing Ficus polita and other plant extracts, found that Ficus polita was completely effective in inhibiting reverse transcriptase of HIV1 – the same process that is targeted by NRTI and NNRTI anti-retrovirals. Infection with the HIV virus causes a state of compromised immunity in the body, which makes an affected individual susceptible to a host of acute and chronic infections. The more commonly seen opportunistic infections include herpes simplex, herpes zoster, tuberculosis, skin infections, gastro-intestinal infections like diarrhea, and different types of cancer. Full-blown AIDS is usually the culmination of an HIV positive status, when the body can no longer effectively cope up with infections.
Ayurvedic medicines can be effectively used to control the HIV infection and prevent a rapid deterioration in immunity. Ayurvedic medicines which can prevent multiplication of the HIV virus include herbs like Bhumyamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica), and Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa).
Infection can be treated and controlled with medicines like Triphala Guggulu, Sukshma Triphala, Kutaj Parpati, Panchamrut-Parpati and Gandhak Rasayan. Purifcation of the “Blood” tissue can be done with the use of medicines like Maha-Manjishthadi-Qwath, Saarivadi-Churna, Chandrakala-Ras and herbs like Manjishtha, Saariva, Nimba, Haridra (Curcuma longa) and Daruharidra(Berberis aristata). This helps in controlling infection as well as preventing tumor formation and malignancies.
Tuberculosis is a major opportunistic infection in HIV positive individuals, and can prove to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Modern anti-tuberculosis drugs have traditionally served well to control this infection, even in HIV positive individuals. However, the rapid emergence of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis has drastically changed the picture for the worse. In this scenario, Ayurvedic medicines can be given as additional therapy in order to bring about a good therapeutic response. Such medicines include Suvarna-Bhasma, Heerak-Bhasma, Abhrak-Bhasma, Trivang-Bhasma, Shrung-Bhasma, Ras-Sindur, Sameerpannag-Ras, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, and Vasant-Kusumakar-Ras.
Opportunistic infections and diseases of the nervous system also prove to be fatal in HIV. Such infections and diseases can be controlled well with Ayurvedic medicines like Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani, Maha-Vat-Vidhvans-Ras, Ekang-Veer-Ras, Tapyadi-Loh, Vish-Tinduk-Vati, Agnitundi-Vati, and herbs like Ashwagandha, Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata), Nirgundi (Vitex negundo) and Haridra.

Basil It is a good source of oleanolic acid and it has an anti-HIV effect.
Hyssop It is strong anti-viral and it has an anti-HIV1 activity.
Sage It has an anti-HIV1 activity.

THERE may be no cure yet for Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome but African researchers are identifying more local plants that can treat opportunistic infections and boost immune function in patients.

MORE studies are supporting the use of herbal therapies to boost CD4 count (a measure of the immune system function) in people living with Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

Top on the list of local herbs that have shown great promise in boosting the immune system are neem tree (dogonyaro or Azadiratcha indica), aloe vera, sweet basil or scent leaf (nchuanwu in Ibo and effirin in Yoruba), garlic, ginger, lemon, lemon grass, and cloves.

According to a study published in Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the extract of neem showed antiretroviral activity and may help in the development of novel antiretroviral and anti-malarial drugs.
The study is titled: “An antimalarial extract from neem leaves is antiretroviral.”

The researchers evaluated an acetone–water neem leaf extract with anti-malarial activity in vitro at 5microgramme/milliliter (?g/ml) for inhibition of adhesion of malaria parasite-infected erythrocytes and cancer cells to endothelial cells, and at 10?g/ml for protection of lymphocytes against invasion by HIV.

The researchers wrote, “the extract was also evaluated in 10 patients with HIV/AIDS at 1000mg daily for 30 days. The mean binding of infected erythrocytes (red blood cells) and cancer cells per endothelial cell was 15 and 11 respectively in the absence of the extract, and zero and two respectively in with the extract. The endothelium is the thin layer of cells that lines the interior surface of blood vessels.

“In the absence and presence of the extract, zero per cent and 75 per cent, respectively, of lymphocytes (white blood cells) were protected. In the treated patients, haemoglobin concentration, mean CD4+ cell count and erythrocyte sedimentation rate, which were initially 9.8g/dl, 126cells/?l and 90mm/h respectively, improved to 12.1g/dl, 241cells/?l and 49mm/h.
Haemoglobin is the iron-containing protein attached to red blood cells that transports oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Mean bodyweight and platelet count, initially 57kg and 328×103/mm3 respectively, increased to 60kg and 359×103/mm3. Platelets help the blood clot.

“ No adverse effects were observed during the study. The extract showed antiretroviral activity with a mechanism of action that may involve inhibition of cytoadhesion. The results may help in the development of novel antiretroviral and anti-malarial drugs.”

African researchers have also found that fractionated neem leaf extract is safe and increases CD4 cell levels in HIV/AIDS patients.
The study was published in American Journal of Therapeutics by researchers from the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, Enugu State.
The researchers investigated the safety and effect of an acetone-water neem leaf extract (IRAB) on CD4 cells in 60 HIV/AIDS patients as part of an ongoing study to determine the influence of neem on immunity and viral load in HIV/AIDS.

The researchers wrote, “patients were confirmed as HIV I or II positive, as having CD4 cell count, less than 300 cells/microL and as anti-retrovirally naïve. They were given oral IRAB (1.0 g daily for 12 weeks). Clinical and laboratory tests were carried out at baseline and at four weekly intervals. Thus, the patients served as their own controls. 60 patients completed treatment. 50 (83.33 per cent) were completely compliant with respect to laboratory tests. Increase in mean CD4 cells, 266 cells/microL (159 per cent), for the 50 patients were significant between baseline and week 12.
“Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (64 mm/hr at baseline) was 16 mm/hr at week 12, whereas total number of incidences of HIV/AIDS-related pathologies decreased from 120 at baseline to 5. Mean bodyweight, hemoglobin concentration, and lymphocyte differential count increased significantly by 12 per cent, 24 per cent, and 20 per cent, respectively.
“There were no adverse effects and no abnormalities in kidney and liver function parameters. The results support the safety of IRAB in HIV/AIDS, and its significant influence on CD4 cells may be useful in the formulation of multidrug combination therapies for HIV/AIDS. However, its antiretroviral activity is being evaluated in our laboratory.”
Also, India has successfully completed phase two trials of a neem based microbicide gel for women that promises to help prevent transmission of HIV/AIDS. Microbicides are a compound with the ability to protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

After animal trials, the first phase of human trials check the toxicological effect of the drug, like itching and swelling. The sample size could be as small as 10 people. Phase two of the clinical trial takes into account more individuals than the previous phase and monitors side effects of the product. In phase three, the trials are generally conducted in multiple sites and amongst multiple risk groups. A favourable result leads to its application for licensing and mass production.
African researchers have also confirmed that lemon juice and lemon grass were more effective in treating oral thrush (candidiasis) than gentian violet.

The study titled: “Treatment of oral thrush in HIV/AIDS patients with lemon juice and lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) and gentian violet” was published in Phytomedicine by researchers at Adelaide Tambo School of Nursing Science, Tshwane University of Technology, Staatsartillerie Road, Pretoria-West, Pretoria 0001, Gauteng, South Africa.
The researchers investigated the safety and efficacy of lemon juice and lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) in the treatment of oral thrush in HIV/AIDS patients when compared with the control group using gentian violet aqueous solution 0.5 per cent.

Oral thrush is a frequent complication of HIV infection. In the Moretele Hospice, due to financial constraints, the treatment routinely given to patients with oral thrush is either lemon juice directly into the mouth or a lemon grass infusion made from lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) grown and dried at the hospice. These two remedies have been found to be very efficacious therefore are used extensively. Gentian violet, the first line medication for oral thrush in South Africa, is not preferred by the primary health clinic patients due to the visible purple stain, which leads them to being stigmatised as HIV-positive. Cymbopogon citratus and lime (Citrus limon) have known antifungal properties.

The study design was a randomised controlled trial. Ninety patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: gentian violet, lemon juice or lemon grass. Inclusion criteria included being HIV-positive with a diagnosis of oral thrush. The study period was 11 days and patients were followed up every second day. International ethical principles were adhered to during the study.

Of the 90 patients, 83 completed the study. In the intention-to-treat analysis, none of the p-values were significant therefore the null hypothesis could not be rejected. In the analysis of the participants who actually completed the trial, the lemon juice showed better results than the gentian violet aqueous solution 0.5 per cent in the treatment of oral thrush in an HIV-positive population. The null hypothesis in terms of the lemon grass and gentian violet could also be rejected on the basis of the Chi-square test and the likelihood ratio test.

The researchers concluded, “though, the patient population was small, the use of lemon juice and lemon grass for the treatment of oral candidiasis in an HIV population was validated by the randomised controlled trial.”

According to a study published in TreatmentUpdate, researchers are focusing on an extract of garlic called ajoene, which also appears to protect CD4 cells from attack by HIV early in the viral life cycle. At low concentrations, the drug appears to have little toxicity, and its anti-HIV activity is 45 times more powerful than the drug dextran sulfate. Ajoene is found only in fresh garlic and is not readily available. One researcher found that garlic impairs the activity of the liver enzymes that process protease inhibitors and raises the protease inhibitor levels.

Also, a manual on nutritional?care and support?for people living?with HIV/AIDShas validated these studies. The manual entitled Living well with HIV/AIDS was developed by the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The manual reads: “Aloe helps to relieve constipation. Boil and drink the concentrated water. To be used in limited amounts; stop immediately if it causes cramps or diarrhoea. Basil helps to relieve nausea and aid digestion; has an antiseptic function for mouth sores. Add to food to treat nausea and digestive problems. Use as gargle for mouth sores. Cayenne stimulates appetite, helps fight infection, heal ulcers and intestina inflammation. Add a pinch to cooked or raw foods. For an energizing drink add to fruit juice or water. Cloves stimulate appetite, help weak digestion, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting Use in soups, stews, warmed fruit juice and tea.

“Garlic has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal function, particularly in the gut, intestines, lungs and vagina. Helps digestion and feeling of weakness. Also good for thrush, throat infections, herpes and diarrhoea Prepare tea or energy drink, or use in food. Ginger improves digestion, energises, relieves diarrhoea and stimulates appetite. Used for treating common colds, flu and nausea, use either as a spice in meals or prepare a ginger tea. Lemon is antibacterial and helps digestion. Add lemon juice to food or drinks. Lemon grass has a calming effect as well as soothing digestion and alleviating stress. Use as tea. Turmeric/ yellow root is a digestive aid, antiseptic and antioxidant. Use powdered in rice, cereals, etc.
“Thyme has antiseptic and antifungal function. Relaxes nervous coughing and increases mucosal secretions (particularly effective in the gut). Stimulates digestion and the growth of the good intestinal flora in the gut. Use as gargle or mouthwash, as a vaginal douche or as tea. Neem brings down fever. Cut a fresh twig, remove the leaves and boil the bark in water; drink as tea. The bark can also be chewed.”

The herbal plant, Prunella vulgaris, also known as self-heal or all-heal, has long been used in herbal medicine by European, Chinese, and North American native healers. With its long history of widespread use in three continents and by many cultures, Prunella vulgaris was bound to capture the attention of modern medical science.
Prunella vulgaris in Cancer, HIV, Herpes and Other Anti-viral Research
In the past decade, scientists have conducted many studies on the herb Prunella vulgaris concerning its anti-cancer effects and anti-viral activity, especially against HIV and herpes viruses.
The BC Cancer Agency (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) has conducted studies on the effectiveness of ancient herbal remedies for lung cancer prevention which included the use of Prunella vulgaris in combination with other herbs. Its website states: “The efficacy of botanical extracts in Western medicine is gaining increasing recognition.” Regarding the compound of six herbs it further states, “A preliminary open study at BCCA also showed promising results in preventing the development and progression of pre-cancerous lesions in the lung.”
According to Cancer Monthly, researchers at Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Greenville Hospital System in South Carolina found that Prunella vulgaris reduced the growth of endometrial cancer cells. They concluded that it may prove an effective treatment for women with endometriosis and certain types of cancer.
Functional FoodNet (University of Guelph) reports that scientists from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia found an anti-herpes virus compound in Prunella vulgaris and concluded that it might prove useful as a new anti-herpes drug.
The US National Institutes of Health have published a study from Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University in Japan. There researchers found that an extract from the flower spikes of Prunella vulgaris exhibited anti-HIV activity in vitro (in the laboratory) and also found that it can be absorbed from the intestine in vivo (in a living organism), thus opening up the possibility of oral administration dosage.
A 2008 study at the University of Iowa, reported in Virology Journal, concluded that multiple Prunella vulgaris consituents have profound anti-viral activity. This study also noted that extracts from a roadside (disturbed habitat) collection of the herb showed more potency than those from a forest-grown (undisturbed habitat) sample. Although not addressed in this study, this may be related to Prunella's need for compacted soil to support its structurally weak stems, as described by Gregory L. Growing Research Interest in Prunella vulgaris, the Plant Known as All-Heal
In Australia, the University of Queensland has investigated new plants which could possibly be used as commercial crops. "New" is defined as a plant not previously produced in a certain agricultural area. In assessing the potential of Prunella vulgaris, the Australian New Crops Website shows that the annual number of research papers mentioning this plant has multiplied more than twenty times from 1926 to 2006, indicating increasing interest.

Pharmaceutical Potential as Anticancer and Anti-HIV Treatment

Prunella vulgaris has journeyed far from its original identification as wildflower and weed. First, traditional herbalists and native peoples embraced it as a panacea, calling it all-heal or self-heal. Then modern gardeners re-discovered it as newly appealing and brought it into their gardens as border plants and groundcovers. Now modern science has focussed on its pharmaceutical potential, especially as an anticancer and anti-HIV treatment. In this way, Prunella vulgaris, the self-heal plant, will come closer to fulfilling the potential of its most promising name—all-heal.

These herbal teas have proved useful in combating the HIV virus in the test tube and some treatments have been patented by pharmaceutical companies. Suggest that HIV discuss any treatment you are considering with your doctor. While taking some of these herbs, certain medications and alcohol should be avoided. Do not try any of these without first talking to your doctor.
The herbal treatments for HIV
Help is herbal HIV. Of course, should be under medical care, but with the approval of doctors who may be a herbal approach with prescribed medication. You can drink a tea made from St. John’s wort, oregano and hyssop. Sweeten with a little licorice, also eat lots of garlic and onion. Herbs can not cure HIV but can stimulate the immune system. Any person who has HIV should be aware of the latest medical and follow medical advice.
Here are herbs that can be useful for HIV.

LICORICE:Licorice tea is useful against any virus. The active compound in licorice is glycyrrhizin. You can live in the ability of the virus to enter host cells and change their genetic material. There have been studies show that licorice inhibits the growth of HIV in a test tube. Add a piece of an ounce of licorice root with one liter of any herbal tea or just chewing the root. Some may prefer a commercial preparation. Licorice is safe to use up to three cups a day, but the long-term use or excessive use can cause headaches, lethargy, sodium and water retention, potassium loss and high blood pressure.
OREGANO:Antioxidants are substances that clean up free radicals, neutralizing their ability to do harm. Oregano is one of the herbs that have the most antioxidants. Make tea of oregano and preferably sweetened with licorice.
ST. JOHN’S WORT: hypericin and pseudohypericin contains compounds which is an antiviral. Shown to be active against HIV in the test tube. A mixture of this plant has been patented as a treatment for cytomegalovirus infection, one of the many infections that strike people with HIV. It suggests taking a dye made from the whole herb, 10 to 30 drops daily in juice several times a day. St. John’s wort contains MAO inhibitors. People taking these should avoid alcohol, fever and resources smoked or pickled foods, cold and hay, amphetamines, drugs, tryptophan and tyrosine. Do not take if pregnant. This herb can also make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.
ALOE: Evidence in test tubes have shown that immune stimulation consisting of aloe vera acemannan may be useful in treating HIV. It can also reduce the requirements of AZT, minimizing the side effects of this potent drug. recommended dose is up to 250 mg four times daily.
